Great Dane Training
Training is a very important part of the care of your Great Dane. Its our responsibility that these loving creatures grow to be a respectable part of
society. As they grow to be one of the largest breeds in the dog world. There size along can scare even the friendliest dog lover. So first and foremost you must
socialize at a young age. its recommended by at least 3 months of age to start
socializing. Although the breeder should be socializing from birth. The biggest
fear instillation period is 6-12 weeks. So during that time it's important to
get them used to everything while being calm and without coddling them.
Let them meet many people and dogs. This will instill confidence, calmness as well as assurance in your Great Dane.
With this breed you must start training from the first day your pup comes in your home. First start with the basic house rules. Continue onto the basic training of the pup. Its much easier to handle them while they are still small. An untrained Great Dane can cause many problems cause of there obvious size.
Respect for its humans is a must not only for you, but for the well being of your Great Dane. The need to bond with its humans is a major part of this breeds needs. This breed has also the want to please its humans so minimal training will be needed to achieve a respectful companion.
There are many different ways of training dogs, but with this breeds sensitive nature. The best route to go is positive reinforcement. Great Danes are very smart and learn quickly along with there need to please. This makes training a Great Dane quite the easy task. There, however, maybe exceptions to this rule. If you have gotten an adult Great Dane that has not been properly socialized and has had little to no training or possible behavioral issues this can make training to be quite a task.
Another thing to remember when bringing your pup into your house is you must show them that you are the leader of the pack (your family). By staying calm and consistent your Great Dane will easily catch on that you are the one he needs to listen to. Another good thing to use for training is a system called NILIF. Also known as Nothing in life is free. If you use this in your every day routine your Great Dane will surely respect your wishes. To give you a little more information on NILIF. Lets say your dog wants to go out and play or has to make a potty trip. Make him or her sit before putting the leash on and allowing her to go out. At dinner time before setting her bowl down make him or her sit and calm down before setting the bowl down and allowing him or her to eat. Same with getting on the furniture (if that is something your going to allow) make them do something for you first.
If you have confidence that your dog CAN do what your asking he will feel the same way and then he will have the confidence as well. Mainly remember that if you are calm, patient and consistent your Great Dane will be come a healthy, respectable member of your family.
