One being there short life span. The other being things like bloat. In order to help prevent things like bloat and give your Great Dane the healthiest life. It is highly recommended that you feed either a high quality kibbles or RAW. Elevated feeders come in to play as well. Although this topic is very controversy. Many will say it prevents bloat others will say is causes it. We at Great Dane Cafe do have some experience when it comes to feeding this loving breed. We recommend doing what looks comfortable for your dog. Which more than likely means elevating feeders. As they don't have to lean over just to reach their food and are less likely to eat to fast and swallow air. Which causes bloat.
Now on to their actual diet. Some foods that are highly recommended are Eagle Pack, Solid Gold Wolf Cub, Canidae, Back to Basics, Wellness, Natures Variety, California Natural, Innova, Pet Guard, Artemis, Spectrum, Wysong, Pinnacle, Merrick canned foods. When it comes to choosing the right food for your Great Dane. There are a few things you must look at. The first thing to look at is the ingredients. Make sure that the first three ingredients do not contain corn, wheat, soy, salt, dried beet pulp, by-products. brewers rice, animal digest, etc. These are all bad for Great Danes. They should be a type of meat, or even something like brown rice. The next thing you should look at is the protein and fat levels. The protein for a Great Dane should not be higher than 24%, fat should be between 12% to 14%. Why should the protein levels not be higher than 24%? This breed already grows extremely fast. The higher the protein the faster the food will make your Great Dane grow. Which causes things like wobblers, PANO and a few other issues. You want your Great Dane to grow as slow as possible. Its not a race to see whose Great Dane grows the fastest. That can only cause future problems.
A few other things to remember when feeding your Great Dane. Things like how often and how much. When it comes to this breed. It highly recommended that up until 3 months they get at least 3 meals a day. (Some owners choose to free feed). At 3 months you can lower it to 2 times a day, but never feed a Great Dane only once a day. That raises the chances of them eating to fast and bloating.
